Leadership Course for
Volunteer and Composite Departments

Beyond Hoses and Helmets:
Strategies and Tactics of Leading
a Volunteer or Composite Fire Rescue Organization

Friday, April 30 (5:00 – 9:00 pm),
Saturday, May 1 (8:30-5:00) and Sunday, May 2

The OAFC is proud to announce that, in partnership with the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, we will be offering a "Canadianized" version of the ‘Beyond Hoses and Helmets’ course developed by the Volunteer and Composite Officers Section (VCOS) of the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

Beyond Helmets and Hoses covers a variety of topics that impact the volunteer or combination fire and rescue departments, and will be of value to all officers or potential officers. It has been designed by practicing Chief Fire Officers, and delivers real world expertise through an interactive educational experience. The course will include instruction in the following areas:

• Leadership
• Training
• Recruitment
• Retention
• Marketing

This 12-hour certificate course is part of the Suburban Rural Seminar weekend package at this year’s OAFC Conference, which is being held at the Doubletree Hotel. To reserve your space you must pre-register with the OAFC office. Participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Registration cost includes: A light meal Friday night; breakfast and lunch on Saturday; breakfast and lunch on Sunday; as well as Sunday Keynote speaker, Chief Billy Goldfeder; the Trade Show and the Memorial Service.
Registration is limited to 50 people.

To register first call the OAFC office (1-800-774-6651) or e-mail administration@oafc.on.ca to ensure that there is space available in the course. Then download the 2010 AMES Registration Form from the bottom of this page (click the red icon beside it), check Suburban and Rural Seminar, and then above where you write your name write 'Beyond Hoses and Helmets'. Complete the form and Fax to the OAFC office.

Trade Show

The OAFC Trade Show is the largest fire and equipment show in Canada! Last year there were over 73 fire vehicles and 200 booths on display indoors at the Toronto Congress Centre. This is where your purchasing committee and mechanics can get on the spot answers to their questions from company experts.The show is being held on Sunday, May 2 and Monday, May 3 from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm each day. All members of the fire service are welcome to attend. Admission is included with any course or program registration. Day passes are available for $20.00.
Firefighting 101: For Municipal and Provincial Politicians

Come and participate in a fire service experience that you will never forget! On Sunday, you slip into bunker gear and experience firsthand the life of a firefighter by participating in a live fire training session. On Monday, there will be seminars on fire department issues, speeches by Provincial Ministers and a visit to the largest fire trade show in Canada.“Let me tell you, it was tough and demanding work. Suburban and Rural Seminar
Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2


This two-day seminar focuses on timely topics of interest to Suburban and Rural Fire Departments. On the Sunday, the participants will join the Pre-Conference Seminar in the morning and trade show in the afternoon.
Hands on Training

The Ontario Association of Fire Training Officers is offering H.O.T. courses on a variety of topics (see registration form). These courses are open to all firefighters. The registration fee for each course includes lunch, breaks and a ticket to the Trade Show. Enrolment for these courses is limited so book early.
The Training Officers Seminar

The Ontario Association of Fire Training Officers are conference partners and encourage all Training Officers to attend.This program runs from Monday to Wednesday, includes all of the key speakers, the Trade show and additional business sessions for the Training Officers.
The Fire Communicators Seminar

The Ontario Fire Communicators Association are conference partners. This one day seminar runs on Monday and includes all of the speakers, the trade show and a Communicators business session.
